This is an early Kaiapoi Woollen Mills wool car rug. Blanket of these type were produced late 1800-Early 1900's putting this blanket as passing its century mark.
These Car Rugs are heavy, there was no scrimping on materials when making a quality product.
Blankets of type were made of very fine wool, spun into a very fine yarn and then woven with a double weave process that put the top layer as patterned and the under layer a solid colour. Effectively producing twice the thickness and density.
In usage terms not the type of blanket you would cosy up in though you could probably survive some pretty harsh temperatures if you did!
This blanket has a vibrant colourway of cream, royal blue, emerald green, primary red, black and gold. The solid colour reverse is a rich maroon red.
Car rug size 130cm x 168cm.
Tassels top and bottom edges.
The star of this rug is the wonderful Maori Chief Kaiapoi label. There is wonderful detail in this label measuring 68mm x 70mm. The label is woven and showing surface damage so would require to be used with care.
This blanket has a number of flaws. There is areas of surface area damage that only reaches through the top layer of the blanket. This blanket has some light marks and a couple of larger patch repairs. It is all part of the journey!
Kaiapoi Woollen Mills Blankets are highly sought after, priced well due to flaws. A great time to own a unique collectors piece!
